Start with a high-performance phono pre-amplifier, high-current power amplifiers, an FM/AM/XM®-ready tuner, video switching and Dolby® Virtual Speaker technology. The receiver can connect to nearly any A/V device, thanks to its pre-out/main-in connectors, three audio-only inputs, two analog-recording outputs (tape and video), dual subwoofer outputs for easy connection to multiple low-frequency cabinets, four A/V inputs with composite video (including one on the front panel for video games or portable audio players), a composite-video monitor output and two digital-audio inputs (one coaxial and the other optical). By leveraging high-current capability (HCC), the HK 3490’s 120-watt-per-channel, integrated amplifier maintains the instantaneous current required to drive nearly any loudspeaker system, delivering dynamic peaks, tight bass and superb transient response at any volume level.

The HK 3490 fuses many appealing exterior ingredients to evoke architectural excellence. A dot-matrix display with easy-to-read navigation menus relays artist information, track numbers and volume levels.

In addition to direct-access tuning and the 30 station presets available for the FM/AM tuner with RDS (Radio Data System), the HK 3490 receiver includes an XM-ready tuner that operates with an XM antenna module (sold separately) for home use. XM radio lets you access additional stations with exclusive satellite-radio content, much of which is commercial-free.

The optional The Bridge II docking station (sold separately) works with an iPod or iPhone player to expand your entertainment options. Once connected, The Bridge II even charges your Apple device and works seamlessly with the HK 3490’s system remote control to navigate and play your favorite music tracks.

Dolby Virtual Speaker mode simulates a realistic, 5.1-channel surround-sound experience from just two speakers. In addition, Dolby Headphone technology recreates a rich audio soundstage using your conventional stereo headphones.

A high-quality phono input enables connection to record players fitted with an MM (moving magnet) cartridge to breathe new life into your vinyl collection of LPs and 45s, letting you hear all those classic albums and singles in the best audio quality.

By switching easily between A/B speakers, the HK 3490 conveniently lets you hear audio playback in more than one room at a time.

The HK 3490 features three audio-only inputs, two analog-recording outputs (tape and video), four A/V inputs with composite video (including one on the front panel for video games or portable audio players), a composite-video monitor output and two digital-audio inputs (one coaxial and the other optical). Stereo pre-amp outputs let you connect the receiver to an external power amplifier.

A seven-device, programmable system remote control is capable of directing your TV, cable boxes, satellite tuners and home theater system. Using the receiver’s multilingual, on-screen display, the remote guides you seamlessly through system setup.

The HK 3490 offers dual subwoofer outputs with triggers for connecting and powering multiple subwoofers. Matching convenience with energy preservation, these intuitive outputs automatically trigger attached subwoofers to turn on or off in response to relayed voltage or audio signals.

For a more intimate listening experience, the receiver’s headphone output features HARMAN headphone surround mode, which helps create a realistic 5.1-channel, surround-sound experience from a stereo source.

Exemplifying the balance among high style, modern design and audio ingenuity, the HK 3490 two-channel receiver embodies the spirit of Harman Kardon innovation, a legacy that discerning audio enthusiasts have revered for almost 60 years. Harman Kardon engineers have consistently advanced the science of sound, developing products that are dedicated to quality, durability and, most importantly, generating rave reviews from audiophiles.

HK 3490 is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Power to burn Great simple receiver with amazing sound and power to burn! Will support volumes high enough to make furniture walk around your room. Originally had it in an enclosure (practically no open area around the sides), and it would overheat after running at high volumes for a few minutes. Added some foot pedestals & laptop fan and never had another problem. I've also moved it out of the enclosure and never had a problem. Pretty much the envy of all the guests fortunate enough to rock out or watch an action movie in my house. The only thing I wish it had was an RF remote instead of IR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rock Solid/but Delicate, too! I've had the HK 3490 for three years and two months. It has more features that most two-channel receivers: pre-out/main in, two subwoofer outputs, mm phono input, toslink optical and RCA coaxial digital inputs, virtual Dolby and Dolby headphone surround. There is more than enough power for inefficient speakers. A truly superior product considering its price, features and performance.

In reference to my HK 3490, I have Bose 901's Series speakers, where I need to connect the amplifier in my HK? Thanks

Asked by: Dionicio
The HK3490 can support your BOSE 901 speakers by connecting the Bose EQ to the pre out/main in section of the HK3490.

Hi I have 2 questions: *  Does it automatically recognize the 4ohm speaker (Magnepan) or is there something I need to do to manually switch it? *  What kind of DAC does it use?

Asked by: Rob Mangler
The HK3490 AVR should recognize any speaker that is connected to it via the speaker terminals. You wouldn't really need any DAC to connect speakers to the AVR.

If I have an iPad, and want to use Bluetooth to send audio to my HK 3490, where would I plug in the input.

Asked by: Mary
If you are using something like the BTA10 Bluetooth device, you can plug the output of the BTA10 into any of the analog inputs on the HK3490, except the PHONO input. Do not use the PHONO input. All others will work great and sound wonderful.

How to set sound-level per input channel? When I switch from CD to for instance Chromecast Audio the sound is extreme hard.

Asked by: Jack Holland
There is no way to adjust the input levels on this receiver. All of these inputs are standardized line level inputs. They cannot be adjusted.

Hi just wanna know if the HK3490 is able to power 4 ohms speaker because in the specs its said 150 w / 4 ohm at full power with 0.2% THD.... thanks

Asked by: lekeven
Yes, with 4 ohms you Will have a perfect performance of the system. Took into consideration that with 4 ohms speakers you only will be able to use one set of them (speaker 1 or speaker 2)
